Service

0Christoph Hilgers

We provide all relevant facilities for the space resolved characterization of rocks and their magnetic properties. Due to our cooperation with industry active in exploration and production, we offer hands-on services.

Contact-free mine- / reservoir scale

In the field we use our terrestrial laser scanner and our different UAVs for fracture pattern detection from surfaces and quarry walls. We detect methane micro-seepage and study options to detect mineralogy contact-free.

Geomagnetics

Our magnetic lab measures the magentic suceptibility and AMS fabric of deformed rocks. Results are matched with mineralogical studies to establish the source of the rock's magentic field. Details of our rock magnetic facilities can be requested from Prof. Dr. Agnes Kontny.

Geomechanics

We establish the rock strengths to establish the mechanical stratigraphy with our own equipment in the field (PLt, rebound) and drill oriented plugs for further UCS and other studies.

Optical microscale

The mineralogy, porosity and its heterogeneity in the rock body are quantified optically for integrated reservoir characterization, geomagnetic analyses and rock quality prediction. This is done with our optical microscopes, which covers transmitted and reflected optical microscopy and as well as cathodoluminescence. Data are coupled with geomechanical results, and serve as input for reservoir quality modeling. Petrographical samples are prepared in our own thin section lab.

Petrophysics

We measure He-permeabilities of tight and porous rocks in our high pressure cells at pressure steps up to 50 MPa and 150°C from from oriented rock cylinders. Additionally, our air permeameter also measures rock cubes. Porosities are measured in our He-pycnometer and a self-designed device. We also measure spectral gamma ray profiles in the field to be correlated with well logging.

Software

We thank Becilab, Geocosm, Golder,Petroleum Experts Ltd. and Schlumberger to provide their reservoir-related software packages FracaFlow, Touchstone, FracMan, MOVE, Petrel and Eclipse for research purposes, which is kindly acknowledged. We document wells with WellCad and EasyCore, predict reservoir porpoerties with TouchStone, and build static and dynamic reservoir models with MOVE, Petrel and Eclipse.

Experiments

In our lab we can run reactive experiments in transparent micro-reactors to establish reaction rates and fundamental cementation and dissolution processes under the microscope.
