Pyrenees

This 5-day MSc field course (module Geology II) focuses on the understanding of the structural geology from the southern part of the Pyrenees towards the Ebro basin. The aim of this field course is to develop an understanding of the collisional deformation style of this alpine foreland thrust and fold belt depending on lithology and structure.

Along three north-south cross sections from the axial zone of the Variscan deformed crystalline rocks and the overlying Mesozoic sedimentary rocks towards the Tertiary deposits, folds, thrusts and unconformities will be studied in order to reconstruct the structural evolution of this alpine orogen. In addition, the Variscan deformation history will be reconstructed macroscopically at prime outcrops on the Cap de Creus peninsula.
